Dental Bonding Can Transform Your Teeth

Dental bonding is an effective way to reshape teeth, cover up defects or restore their function. The procedure can be used to tackle a variety of oral issues like stained and deformed teeth. The treatment is performed using composites that are made with mixtures of plastics and glass. These composites can be color-matched with the patient’s teeth so that repairs made do not stick out.

Dental bonding is one of the least invasive treatments that can transform the appearance of a person’s smile. Unlike dental crowns and veneers, the application of composites does not require the removal of enamel from teeth being treated. The process is reversible, and the patient can still have the tooth treated with other restorations in the future.

How dental bonding transforms smiles

Dental bonding is mostly used to improve the appearance of a patient’s teeth, but it can also be used to restore the function of damaged teeth. For example, minor to moderately broken teeth can be fixed with composite resins, restoring their bite function.

Here is how composite bonding can transform your smile:

1. Fixes a variety of dental problems

Dental bonding provides a non-invasive solution for a variety of common dental problems like:

  • Chipped or broken teeth

  • Deformed teeth

  • Short teeth

  • Gaps

  • Stained teeth

  • Cavities

  • Eroded teeth

2. Provides fast results

Oral restorations like crowns or veneers often require multiple visits to the dentist to complete the treatment. With dental bonding, a single visit is all a patient needs to transform their smile. The process typically takes anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour for each tooth being repaired.

3. Effective and safe

Composite bonding has been used for over five decades and there are no significant risks. The treatment is pain free, so it is typically done without using a local anesthetic. The exception is if tooth decay is being treated because the dentist will need to remove decayed tooth material from the tooth being treated.

The dentist color-matches the composite used so repairs do not look out of place. The process starts with the dentist preparing the tooth with a solution or gel that roughens it. The composite is then applied to the tooth, shaped and hardened with an ultraviolet light. The process is repeated a few times before the dentist finishes it by polishing the tooth.

4. Low maintenance solution

Teeth that have been restored with a composite resin do not require any special cleaning. Good oral hygiene is enough to keep the material used in good condition. Patients can also increase the longevity of repairs made with composites by avoiding things that can damage them like biting on hard items.
